Cachaca

Never one to turn down a free cocktail, I had the distinct pleasure of trying a Caipirinha, Brazil's National Cocktail. Mine was made with Ypioca "Silver" Cachaca ($$), 1/2 lime, quartered and muddled, and 2 teaspoons of cane sugar. Quite tasty, and many more will be consumed as the weather gets better. Wikipedia has the how-to and the where-from. Drinkhacker.com has a nice bit on the Ypioca, which is pretty much the Cachaca.

Caipirinhas, wonderful cocktails! I'm actually from Fairfield myself but we now have our own Frank Pepe's Pizza here as well so I find myself in New Haven less often when I'm jonesing for that white clam pie.

When in season I'd recommend trying a caipirinha with kiwi or strawberries, very popular in Brazil. You make it just like a lime caipirinhas but adjust the sugar accordingly. Also the sugar that works really well for caipirinhas is domino superfine sugar, it's the same granularity as the stuff in Brazil. Now if you're feeling creative, agave nectar, mint, fresh watermelon juice, and some red chili flakes can really put make something cool and unique for your next party.

Best Regards,

Cachaca Dave

Hi ECWINO,

Just saw your comments on Ypióca Prata and it makes as very proud here at Ypioca Agroindustrial in the state of Ceara Brazil to know that you enjoyed your caipirinha made with our cachaça. About Ypioca; 160 years old family company , since 1848 the largest estate producer of aged cachaça in Brazil (all our cachaças aged a minimun to 1-6 years in wooden casks). About Ypioca Prata it is aged a minimum of two year´s in Freijo wood (extremely hard wood does not leave any coloring or taste just mellows it out).

I presume you are out and about in New Haven (great city), some of my favorite spots that serve Ypioca, 116 Crown (say Hi to John and Daniella from Christian Castren), The Firehouse, Zinc Bar, Geronimo, Temple Bar, Cafe Bottega, Barcelona should serve it as well.

To buy a bottle go to see Sunny at College Liquor Store and say hi from Christian de Ypióca guy from Brazil.

Cheers,
